Icebergs in the South Atlantic Ocean

January 3, 2009
White icebergs float in nearly black water in this image, captured by the MODIS on the Terra satellite. This image of part of the South Atlantic Ocean was captured on December 27, 2008.

Some of the icebergs shown here are quite big and obvious. However, if you look at the larger images, you can see dozens of smaller specks in the water, which are potentially also icebergs. Icebergs are common in this region of the South Atlantic Ocean, located near South George Island, east of the southern part of South America and just north of Antarctica.
