Isolated Snow in Nebraska

March 22, 2009
Early spring has Nebraska looking uniformly brown except for an isolated snowfall in the western part of the state, stretching northwards from Lake McConoughy. North of this lake is the region of this state known as Sand Hills, a region of mixed-grass prairie that has plant-anchored dunes of sandy soil.

Nebraska is bordered by South Dakota to the north, visible at the top of the image. To the west is Wyoming. Colorado is in the bottom left corner.

This image was captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on March 12, 2009.
