Trailing Away

October 27, 2009
This mosaic of two NEAR Shoemaker images, taken August 20, 2000, from an orbital altitude of 49 kilometers (31 miles), shows an oblique view of Eros' surface as it trails away to the horizon. The stark shadows inside the craters at left result from the low, almost grazing angle of sunlight to the asteroid's surface. The very dense population of impact craters indicates this part of Eros has undergone few other types of surface modification. (Mosaic of images 0142203174 and 0142203236)
