Crater with a Tail
October 27, 2009
NEAR Shoemaker caught this picture of an old, heavily cratered part of Eros from an orbital altitude of 119 kilometers (74 miles), while taking a flyover movie on November 1, 2000. The whole view is about 4.1 kilometers (2.6 miles) across. Surface fracturing has heavily deformed the craters. The crater at the right edge of the frame, just below center, is cut by multiple fractures in such a way that a "tail" appears to extend to the upper left.
