This scanning electron microscope image shows the sharpness and the hexagonal structure of these ZnO nanotips. The image was prepared as part of National Science Foundation research grant CCR 01-03096, "Feasibility Studies on ZnO Nanostructures and their Device Applications," an exploratory research in the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Initiative program.

The goals of this project were (a) to grow ZnO-based nanoscale structures, including nanotips and nanotip arrays, nanowires and quantum dots; and (b) to investigate the broad applications of these ZnO nanostructures in UV optoelectronics, biosensors and advanced communications. The ZnO materials are grown using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). (Year of image: 2001)
