In the foreground of this image is the plant Arabidopsis thaliana

May 7, 2010
In the foreground of this image is the plant Arabidopsis thaliana, the subject of an international genome sequencing project that was successfully completed in the year 2000. The DNA-sequencing screen in the background produces the images that allow researchers to see nucleic acid sequences. Each color represents one of the four base chemicals that make up DNA: A (adenine), G (guanine), C (cytosine) and T (thymine). (Year of image: 2000)
