Different shaped ZnO nanopillars can be obtained by varying the deposition conditions. This SEM photograph shows hexagonal ZnO nanocrystallites.

More about this Image This work was supported by National Science Foundation grant CCR 01-03096, "Feasibility Studies on ZnO Nanostructures and their Device Applications," an exploratory research in the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Initiative. The goals of the project were to (a) grow ZnO-based nanoscale structures, including nanotips and nanotip arrays, nanowires and quantum dots; and (b) investigate the broad applications of these ZnO nanostructures in UV optoelectronics, biosensors and advanced communications. The ZnO materials are grown using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD).
