A team of researchers led by Dr. Chongwu Zhou, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at the University of Southern California, built small-scale molecular memory arrays using nanowires as the top electrodes and interconnects for molecular wires. This approach is immune to the pinhole defects in the self-assembled molecular wires and has significantly improved the yield of molecular devices.

The work is carried out in collaboration with professor James Tour of Rice University, and Dr. Meyya Meyyappan of NASA's Ames Research Center. Zhou believes this approach can lead to more sophisticated, integrated molecular systems.

This project is supported by National Science Foundation grant ECS 01-32982. The project title is "CAREER: Molecular Scale Electronic Devices and Systems."
