A virtual fantasy image titled "Glasbaum."

This image was created using a ray tracing method. To create an image, the computer is provided with a description of the 3-D scene that is to be shown. The computer then simulates taking a photograph of the scene by tracing the paths of light rays as they bounce around in the virtual scene. The ray tracing method makes it possible to simulate visual effects, such as the interplay of light sources and surfaces, shadows, reflection and refraction. The scene descriptions can range from very simple arrangements of geometric objects, like spheres, cylinders, cones or triangles, to complex models. For example, those generated by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging methods. (Year of image: 2000)
