This image was taken during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 198, a scientific cruise that departed in 2001 to investigate the geologic evolution of Shatsky Rise in the western Pacific Ocean. Research during the trip also focused on the climatic and paleoceanographic conditions during the Cretaceous and Paleogene periods. ODP is a program within the National Science Foundation and involves other participating countries. (Year of image: 2001)
