Northern Honshu Island, Japan

May 20, 2010
Featured in this image is the northern half of the Japanese island of Honshu. The urban areas are easily visible as gray blotches on the green landscape. The northern part of Tokyo is visible on the eastern coast, at the bottom of the image. Honshu is Japan' main island. To its north, across the Tsugaru Strait, is Hokkaido. To the south, across the Inland Sea, is Shikoku.

Honshu is mountainous and volcanic with frequent earthquakes. It is also home to Japan's highest mountain, Mount Fuji. Mount Fuji is southwest of Tokyo and just out of frame on this image. There are several visible mountain ranges in this image, some of which are capped with snow.
