Fumaroles and sulphur deposits on the lava dome of Merapi in central Java, Indonesia. Fumaroles are vents or openings where steam, hydrogen sulfide or other gases escape from beneath the earth's surface. The craters of many dormant volcanoes contain active fumaroles. (Date of Image: 2004)
