Network Infomechanical Systems -- Washington State (Image 1) Researchers deploy a sensor node along a cable suspended 150 feet high. The robotic sensor package, from UCLA's Network Infomechanical Systems (NIMS) project of the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS), is suspended on a cableway between the canopies of two trees 150 feet above the forest floor at the Wind River Canopy Crane Research Facility, Washington State. The instrument can move along the cable, as well as up and down, providing images and precise local climate data. This provides both autonomous investigation capability and realtime remote access to the forest, from the surface to the canopy tops. [One of three related images.
