Aftermath of Turkish Earthquake (Image 4)

June 14, 2010
Aftermath of Turkish Earthquake (Image 4) In the foreground lie the remains of steel lockers and beds, amidst other debris, from Celtiksuyu Boarding School. The school was devastated by the May 2003 earthquake in Bingol, Turkey. This image was taken by a team of researchers led by Purdue University civil engineering professors Julio Ramirez and Mete Sozen, who traveled to Turkey following the quake to study the damage. The team, who were sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and TUBITAK, the NSF counterpart in Turkey, submitted their findings with regards to future construction practices to help save lives. For more information, see the NSF Discovery story "Earthquake Study Suggests Simple Building Fixes Can Save Lives," from Oct. 13, 2005. (Date of Image: May 18, 2003) [One of 5 related images.
