The National Science Foundation's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) supports a Research Infrastructure Improvement Award in Alabama (EPS 04-47675). See Next Image.] More about ACNM ACNM is a multi-institutional center consisting of Tuskegee University (TU), Alabama A&M University (AAMU), Auburn University (AU), University of Alabama, Huntsville, (UAH), and the University of South Alabama (USA). The center is led by TU, one of the oldest HBCUs in the nation. ACNM seeks to develop and characterize nanostructured materials by infusing nanoparticles at the nascent stage of synthesis of a variety of bulk materials that will have applications in structures, optics, lasers and other thermoelectric devices, to improve their performances.The center is built on two thrust areas: development of nanophased structural composites, led by TU; and synthesis and production of bulk nano-crystalline materials, led by AAMU. The proposed interaction among the faculty and students of the participating institutions will not only bring minorities into the main stream of Alabama EPSCoR research, but will also foster a significant growth in the nanomaterials research field in Alabama, making it visible nationally. Interaction will also routinely take place with the other Alabama EPSCoR centers through video-conferences, workshops and seminars. ACNM funds have been allocated to support graduate students as well as several target faculty members and postdoctoral research associates to serve as mentors for both graduate and undergraduate students. Procurement of equipment and sharing of experimental facilities will be done primarily through non-federal funding. The center has been remarkably successful at attracting funding from other agencies. These efforts will continue through the proposed alliance with other partnering institutions to maintain sustained funding beyond the timeframe of the EPSCoR project.
