Portion of a Polystyrene Surface

June 16, 2010
Portion of a Polystyrene Surface Snapshot from a molecular dynamics simulation of a portion of a polystyrene (PS) surface after the deposition of 240 C3F5+ ions at experimental fluences and the equilibration of the system. The image is focused on precursors of fluorocarbon polymer growth that are formed as a result of the deposition and equilibration process. Red spheres are F atoms, green spheres are C atoms from the ions, blue spheres are C atoms from the PS, and white spheres are H. atoms. This image was obtained as part of a National Science Foundation-funded project to study the chemical modification of surfaces through polyatomic ion beam deposition, among other things. The grant number is CHE 02-00838. (Date of Image: June 2004)
