Robotics Demonstration (Image 3) Children watch a robot demonstration during the exhibit "Robots: An exhibition of U.S. Automations from the Leading Edge or Research," which took place on Sept. 16, 2005 at National Science Foundation headquarters in Arlington, Va. Dozens of robots and their creators from across the nation had a chance to showcase their advanced robotics technology. Among the exhibits of flying, hopping and scooting robots was a learning humanoid head and a full-scale mockup of the Mars Exploration Rover. The purpose of the exhibit was to highlight U.S.-funded robotics research and the findings of a new study, the World Technology Evaluation Center International Study of Robotics. The report was a culmination of nearly 2-years of evaluation of robotics research and development in the United States, Japan, Korea and Western Europe. Results of the study were both positive and negative regarding U.S. robotics research. For example, the study found that although the United States had developed advanced robotics, national strategies and coordinated funding efforts in other countries pose a serious challenge to U.S. competitiveness. The United States leads in such areas as robot-assisted surgery and mobile, space robots, but foreign laboratories are developing state-of-the-art service and industrial robots and in some cases are overtaking the United States in fields we once dominated. The report found similar trends across the six different categories of the report: Robotic Vehicles; Space Robotics; Industrial, Service and Personal Robots; Humanoid Robots; Robotics in Biology and Medicine; and Networked Robots. The report was sponsored by NSF, NASA and the National Institutes of Health, and was drafted by a panel of six robotics experts who visited more than 50 research sites across the globe.
