HPWREN-Fighting Fires (Image 4)

June 23, 2010
HPWREN-Fighting Fires (Image 4) An image of a fire on June 30, 2006 which threatened the San Diego State University (SDSU) Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve, as seen from a wide-angle network camera, and sent across the High Performance Wireless Research and Education Network (HPWREN). HPWREN is used by emergency management agencies like the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) to aid their firefighting efforts. For example, on July 23, 2006, CDF contacted HPWREN to set up communications for high-speed wireless data at an Incident Command Post (ICP) in support of firefighting operations during the Horse Fire in San Diego County. The fire was situated within the Cleveland National Forest and firefighting efforts were led by the United States Forest Service (USFS). HPWREN is based on work sponsored by the National Science Foundation under grant numbers 0087344 and 0426879. The HPWREN research program also functions as a collaborative cyberinfrastructure on research, education and first responder activities. It includes creating, demonstrating and evaluating a non-commercial, prototype, high-performance, wide-area, wireless network in San Diego, Riverside and Imperial counties. The network includes backbone nodes at the University of California, San Diego, and San Diego State University campuses, and a number of "hard to reach" areas in remote environments. To learn more about HPWREN and it's various collaborative efforts, visit the HPWREN Web site. (Date of Image: June 30, 2006) [Image 4 of 4 related images. Back to Image 1.]
