June 28, 2010
ARC LTER (Image 3) August collection of soil samples for measuring soil nitrogen in the Arctic Long Term Ecological Research (ARC LTER) program experimental plots. To the left is a greenhouse in which nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer have been added. With the cover rolled up for the winter, the increase in birch shrubs due to the increase in warmth and nutrients is evident. In the background is Toolik Lake. The ARC LTER site is part of a network of sites established by the National Science Foundation to support long-term ecological research in the United States. The ARC LTER research site is located in the foothills region of the North Slope of Alaska and is based out of the University of Alaska's Toolik Field Station, with the principal year-round institute based at The Ecosystems Center, Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Mass.
