Urban Visualization and Planning Studies (Image 1) A 3-D interactive visualization of the Buffalo-Niagara Medical Campus. The Buffalo-Niagara Medical Campus is in an area of downtown Buffalo, NY, consisting of several nationally renowned medical research facilities, including the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, and Buffalo General Hospital. It will also be home to a new building that will house the University at Buffalo's (UB) recently established Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics, as well as new buildings for the Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute. The Center for Computational Research (CCR) at UB--already recognized for their visualization work on the Peace Bridge Visualization Project, "BuffLink"--was approached with a proposal to develop a 3-D interactive visualization of the existing medical campus and several proposed buildings. Working with IBC Digital (a Buffalo-based production, modeling and animation company), CCR developed a real-time simulation of the campus, which spans eight city blocks of downtown Buffalo. CCR is a member of The Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation, or CASC. The National Science Foundation is one of several federal agencies in partnership with CASC, whose members develop partnerships with federal and state government entities, as well as with private industry leaders, to contribute to strategic national goals.
