July 2, 2010
Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (Image 1) A map of current Global Seismographic Network (GSN) station coverage on Earth, as of August 2005. Sites added in the past five years are noted in purple (stations) and orange (arrays). Sites in the planning state are flagged with white stars. Cooperative sites are indicated by symbols on the upper right "shoulder" of the stars. GSN is one of the four major components of the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) Consortium. The goal of the GSN is to deploy and maintain over 128 permanent seismic recording stations uniformly over the earth's surface. IRIS is a university research consortium dedicated to exploring the Earth's interior through the collection and distribution of seismographic data. IRIS programs contribute to scholarly research, education, earthquake hazard mitigation and the verification of a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Support for IRIS comes from the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies, universities and private foundations. For more information, visit the IRIS Web site, Here.
