SCEC Velocity Model (Image 1) Image based on the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) Community Velocity Model CVM-3.0, a 3-D velocity model used by earthquake modeling groups as their earth structure model for large-scale earthquake wave propagation simulations. Interactive rendering created using a parallel computational Grid. The Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) is a community of over 600 scientists, students, and others at over 60 institutions worldwide, headquartered at the University of Southern California. SCEC is funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Geological Survey to develop a comprehensive understanding of earthquakes in Southern California and elsewhere, and to communicate useful knowledge for reducing earthquake risk. For more information, visit the center Web site. The community model was supported by National Science Foundation grant EAR 01-22464, "The SCEC Community Modeling Environment (SCEC/CME): An Information Infrastructure for System-level Earthquake Rsearch."
