Genomics and Population Modeling (Image 2) A marine thrombolite, an ancient microbial community, has lived in the shallow waters of the Bahamas for thousands of years. Thrombolite samples were collected as part of a biocomplexity project that studied the composition and diversity of bacteriophage communities in solar salterns by high throughput DNA sequencing. Bacteriophage are viruses of bacteria and recent evidence is that they are hugely abundant and diverse in nature. [Note: the thrombolite sampling was supported by the National Science Foundation Biocomplexity Program under grant DEB-BE 04-21955. (Date of Image: March 2005) [See Related Image.]
