Elephant Seals Spar

July 8, 2010
Elephant seals spar in the midst of king penguins in Antarctica. Elephant seals can reach 4.5 meters (14 feet, 6 inches) in length, while king penguins stand about 95 centimeters (37.5 inches) tall. Elephant seal studies is just one example of the many research projects supported by the National Science Foundation's U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP). Other Antarctic study areas are aeronomy and astrophysics, biology and medicine, geology and geophysics, glaciology, and ocean and climate systems. Outreach, such as the Antarctic Artists and Writers program, and education programs are also supported. For more information about USAP, visit the program's Web site. (Date of Image: February 2005)
