Information technology (IT) skills are critical for computer-aided manufacturing and other work environments. The National Workforce Center for Emerging Technologies (NWCET) seeks to provide state and national leadership to create innovative IT and IT-related educational programs through research, professional development, business partnerships and curriculum development to meet the needs of the 21st century workforce. More about this Image The NWCET researches emerging technology needs in information technology (IT) labor markets and industry trends; develops innovative partnerships to enhance technology education at community colleges; presents annual faculty development institutes and IT career days; and serves as a state resource for IT through the Washington Center for IT Excellence (CITE) based at NWCET.

NWCET partners with several community colleges to cultivate students' knowledge of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to recruit students for STEM careers. The three partners Identify incoming community college students who express an interest in STEM fields; encourage students to persist as STEM majors with a sequence of two-credit courses that use inquiry-based projects to connect students with industry representatives; develop and refine the curricula to utilize input from industry partners and student participants; and incorporate input from all stakeholders to improve the curricula and to strengthen the model. NSF's ATE program supports efforts to improve the knowledge and skills of technicians who work in high-technology fields that drive the nation's economy. The program focuses on undergraduates, secondary school students and incumbent technicians, as well as on the educators who teach them. Community colleges are the main providers of education for technicians and have leadership roles in all ATE initiatives, working closely with industry, government and educators in other sectors to enhance the skills of the men and women who are essential to the vitality of the nation's economy. ATE partnerships help create new curricula; reform existing programs; enrich the technical knowledge of experienced college faculty members and teachers; prepare prospective educators with solid foundations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); and undertake applied research on technological education.
