Variation in Vole Gene (Image 2)
July 26, 2010
The length of a microsatellite DNA--5 to 5,000 repeated copies of identical short DNA sequences scattered throughout genomes--region near the vasopressin receptor gene was discovered to have an effect on social behavior in voles. Genome data for this same microsatellite reveals strong similarities in DNA sequences between humans and bonobos (known for their strong social bonds), while DNA of the more-aggressive chimpanzees differs from both humans and bonobos in this region.
