Detailed Picture of Star (Image 1)
July 27, 2010
Illustration showing Altair, a star that spins so quickly, it stretches at its equator. Astronomers have now captured an image of Altair with such fine detail that variations can be seen on the star's surface.
The picture was captured by an international team of astronomers using four of the six telescopes at a facility on Mount. Wilson in California, operated by the Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) at Georgia State University in Atlanta, with partial support from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
