Orion Spacecraft Takes Shape 3
August 5, 2010
A weld technician monitors as the bulkhead and nosecone of the Orion ground test article are joined using friction stir welding at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility, New Orleans, La. The vehicle is seen in the background, inverted in the tool for the weld. Nondestructive evaluations will validate the strength and integrity of the weld before the spacecraft is prepped for ground testing in flight-like environments, including static vibration, acoustics and water landing tests.
