Whirling over the Philippines with over 150 mph winds, the Aqua MODIS instrument captured this true-color image Typhoon Nida on May 16, 2004. Nida would gust up to 185 mph, churning these waters 414 miles east-southeast of Manila. More than 16,000 people have been displaced or stranded in the eastern and central Philippines as hurricane-force winds forced ports to close. Nida is expected to turn toward Taiwan.
