Counting the Youth in a Middle Aged Galaxy

This image is roughly 1/34 of the entire GLIMPSE Survey of our Milky Way galaxy. This small section is riddled with young stellar objects (circles). The number of young stars was used to estimate the heartbeat of the Milky Way, or how fast new stars are being born.
