Backdropped against Earth, the Shuttle Pointed Autonomous Research Tool for Astronomy (SPARTAN-201) satellite begins its separation from the space shuttle Discovery. The free-flying spacecraft, 130 nautical miles above the Indian subcontinent, remained some 40 miles away from Discovery until the crew retrieved it two days later.
