Payload specialist Roger K. Crouch (nearer camera) confers with astronaut Michael L. Gernhardt, mission specialist, prior to performing operations at the Large Isothermal Furnace (LIF) facility. LIF facility was flown on a mission in cooperation with the National Space Development Agency (NASDA) of Japan. The Japanese furnace was part of an international group of experiment teams who are developing hardware to be installed on the International Space Station (ISS). The LIF facility will continue to study ways that heating and cooling different metals and alloys behave in a Microgravity environment.
