The city of San Antonio, Texas was captured with an electronic still camera (ESC) as the Space Shuttle Columbia passed over southern Texas. The well-marked central business district with streets north-south and east-west is surrounded by blocks of suburban homes and small businesses set between the radial transportation routes. Mid to late twentieth century ring corridors separate the urban/suburban region from surrounding agricultural countryside. Texas' third largest city was founded around permanent springs that rise at the foot of the Balcones Escarpment. Several former and current military bases are visible in the area. San Antonio International Airport can be seen at the foot of the escarpment in the northern part of the city.
