This Electronic Still Camera (ESC) image shows astronaut Kathryn P. Hire, mission specialist, working with the Bioreactor Demonstration System (BDS) onboard the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Columbia. The BDS is designed to perform cell biology experiments under controlled conditions. The device is used to study the growth of human kidney and bone marrow cells in space.
