This partially computer-generated scene depicts anticipated coverage by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) of topographic features on Earth. Heavy cloud cover, hurricanes and cyclonic storms can prevent optical cameras on satellites or aircraft from imaging some areas. SRTM radar, with its long wavelength, will penetrate clouds as well as providing its own illumination, making it independent of daylight.
