Snoopy, who has had a long history with the astronauts and Houston's Mission Control Center, showed up in the Shuttle Flight Control Room on one of the consoles during the STS-99 mission. The NASA Astronaut personal safety award -- called the Silver Snoopy -- is given for outstanding performance by NASA employees or NASA contractors who contribute to flight safety or mission success. Snoopy is a product of the imagination of the late cartoonist Charles Schulz. Schulz died on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, the second day of the 11-day SRTM mission and on the eve of his final color strip appearing in Sunday newspapers on February 13, 2000.
