Flying five miles a second above Ukraine, astronaut James D. Halsell, Jr., mission commander, operates controls on the aft flight deck to gently pull the Space Shuttle Atlantis into port, flawlessly latching his 100-ton spacecraft to the 35-ton International Space Station (ISS) for a five-day stay. Halsell and his crew performed the rendezvous and docking with the station by the book, docking on target just before the end of the day May 20 CDT.
