NGC 5474

April 18, 2005
This ultraviolet image of the spiral galaxy NGC 5474 was taken during June 7th 2003 as part of the GALEX nearby galaxy survey. This galaxy is located 20 Million light years away from the Earth and is a member of a group of galaxies dominated by the large spiral galaxy Messier 101. This picture is a combination of GALEX images taken with the FUV (colored blue) and NUV detectors (colored red).

Star formation in this galaxy, traced by the ultraviolet emission detected by GALEX, shows some evidence of a disturbed spiral pattern, which may have been induced by gravitational interaction with Messier 101.

The red stars in this image are foreground stars in our own Milky Way galaxy.
