Coast of Tunisia

April 21, 2005
Clouds of milky blue and green sediment swirl and curve up the coast of Tunisia, creating a halo in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. In this true-color Terra MODIS image, acquired April 8, 2005, the swirls stretch from the coast of northwestern Algeria, at lower right, up into the Golfe de Gabes at center, and north toward the coastal cities of Sousse and Nabeul. Sediment from the shallow coastal floor is likely the greatest source of cloudiness in the water, though phytoplankton or algae might also be contributing to the darker green colors.
