Southeastern United States

January 15, 2013
The Visible/Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite or VIIRS produced a 'true-color', color scaled, and gray scaled variation of the Southeastern United States. This was taken on January 19, 2012, the first day the full complement of VIIRS' 22 channels were active. These images were acquired between 12:57 pm and 1:04 pm USA EST on 2012/01/19. Suomi NPP is NASA's next Earth-observing research satellite. It is the first of a new generation of satellites that will observe many facets of our changing Earth. The Visible/Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite or VIIRS is the primary imaging instrument onboard NPP, and it acquires data in 22 spectral bands covering visible, near-infrared, and thermal infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
