Fire and Smoke in Southeast Australia

February 15, 2013
On February 2, 2003, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite detected fires (red dots) still burning in southeast Australia. A shroud of smoke hangs over Victoria and stretches out over the Bass Strait. These fires have been burning for about one month. Credit: Jeff Schmaltz, MODIS Rapid Response Team, NASA/GSFC
