While snow still blankets eastern Russia (right) and China (left) and ice still fills inlets, bays, and lakes such as Lake Khanka (center), a few fires (red dots) indicate that farmers in the region may be thinking of spring, and are using fire to clear the land for planting or to renew pasture.
