Fires in West Africa

February 20, 2013
A high concentration of fires (red dots) was detected in southern Guinea (center) in West Africa on March 10, 2003, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite. Other countries shown are (clockwise from top left) Senegal (surrounding Gambia), Mali, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea-Bissau. Over the Atlantic Ocean (left), dust from the Sahara Desert creates a tan haze. The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS’ maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters. Credit: Image courtesy Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Rapid Response Team at NASA GSFC
