Scattered fires across the Deep South were detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite on April 1, 2003, and are marked with red dots in this true-color image. At bottom left is Louisiana, and to the east are Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina (to the northeast). At bottom right is Florida.
