Fires Across Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo

February 28, 2013
Hundreds of fires were burning across Angola (left) and Democratic Republic of Congo (right) in central Africa on May 22, 2003. As the Aqua satellite passed over the area, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) captured this true-color image of the region and detected the fires, which are marked with red dots. Large areas of Africa burn each year, and the area affected shifts north and south of the equator with the seasons. Fires are a central part of agricultural and land management activities in Africa.
