Pollution and Smog Across Central China

April 3, 2013
Dense, white fog fills a heart-shaped region in the Sichuan Basin of Central China. The lighter colored haze that permeates the scene is caused largely by carbon particles released into the atmosphere from coal-fired power plants, industry and home heating. Numerous fires, marked in red, could also be contributing to the haze. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image on December 23, 2003.
