Southwest Asia Dust Storm

April 5, 2013
A large dust storm was sweeping across the rugged, arid terrain of southern Afghanistan (top), Pakistan (bottom), and extreme eastern Iran (left edge) on June 7, 2004, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite observed the region. The pale dust dominates the center of the image, while the large sandy deserts of the region appear rust-colored. The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at additional resolutions. Credit: Image courtesy Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Rapid Response Team, NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center
