R/V Sikuliaq towed to dry dock (Image 2)

October 22, 2013
The R/V Sikuliaq is seen here getting a tow on the Marinette River in Wisconsin as it heads to dry dock in Sturgeon Bay. The ship was towed from Marinette Marine Corporation (MMC), where it was built, to Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay on June 11, 2013. The ship was dry docked as part of a shipbuilding contract to have the bottom painted, installation of various sonar transducers and work on the Z-drives. The National Science Foundation (NSF) funded construction of the ship under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (grant OCE 09-39812) and will retain ownership. However, the ship will be operated by the University of Alaska Fairbanks as part of the U.S. Academic Research Fleet on NSF's behalf.
