Great Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda)

September 14, 2005
Great Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) swims through coral reef habitat on the west coast of Mona Island, Puerto Rico. Barracudas, as piscivorous (fish eaters) and general carnivores, are one of the top predators of the reef ecosystem using bursts of speed and sharp teeth to catch their prey. They are found frequently over coral reefs, near mangroves, and in sea grass beds. Image courtesy of Ron Hill, NOAA Fisheries, SEFSC-Galveston.
