Yellow Sea, China

January 16, 2006
This Medium Level 1 Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) was acquired over the Yellow Sea, arm of the Pacific Ocean. It is bordered on the west and north by Hebei, Tianjin, Shandong and Liaoning provinces (China).

The Yellow Sea merges with the East China Sea, located off the eastern and southeastern coasts of Asia. Bohai Strait (center image), which separates Shandong and Liaodong peninsulas (upper left), provides access to the Bo Hai gulf and the Gulf of Liaodong (top left border).

In the image it is possible to see, in light brown, a vast sedimentation area along the coasts, possibly due to the heavy rainfall experienced in the region several days earlier.
